A Florida grandfather was shot dead over an alleged dispute with his neighbor about a music complaint on Thanksgiving.

According to PEOPLE, 71-year-old Hureleyon McLean was shot and killed in Lauderdale Lakes on Thursday (November 28).

Police said McLean was shot during an "altercation" with his neighbor, who "cooperated with detectives" and claimed he opened fire out of "self-defense."

McLean's wife, Rose, said she and her husband were celebrating Thanksgiving with loved ones when the shooting occurred. Rose said the neighbor, who lives one floor below them, left a note at their apartment complaining that their music was too loud.

Rose said her husband went downstairs to speak to the neighbor when she heard a gunshot.

“He was just standing, looking at me with his gun in his hand," the wife said. “And I go up to him and say, ‘Why did you shoot my husband? Why?’ And he said to me, if I didn’t shut my mouth, he would shoot me too."

Broward County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the incident and found McLean “suffering from a gunshot wound." He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident is still under investigation by the sheriff's office. Once the investigation is complete, police said "the case will be presented to the Broward County State Attorney's Office to determine if criminal charges will be filed" against the neighbor.
