The internet is buzzing after a journalist from The Atlantic magazine was inadvertently invited into a Signal chat group with top Trump officials detailing plans to carry out U.S. military airstrikes.
On Wednesday (March 26), The Atlantic exposed the leaked Signal chat with journalist Jeffrey Goldberg and top Trump officials, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, and Vice President JD Vance.
Goldberg was inadvertently added to the group message, called Houthi PC Small Group, where officials discussed hitting Iran-backed Houthi sites with military airstrikes. The Atlantic journalist was mistakenly invited to the chat by Waltz and observed the group's conversations, unknowingly to the officials in the group.
The White House maintained on Tuesday (March 25) that no war plans or classified material was shared in the breached chat. The Atlantic said in a statement that they decided to expose the messages to let people "reach their own conclusions."
Among the details shared by officials was the timing of planned airstrikes by U.S. attack jets and armed drones on militant Houthi targets in Yemen earlier this month. The Atlantic also dropped screenshots of the group texts, which show drone targets, the sequencing of the attacks, and the type of weaponry used.
Several social media users called out the Trump administration's recklessness for allowing the Signal group chat to be infiltrated. Even former presidential candidate and first lady Hillary Clinton joined in on the conversation.
