New York City Mayor Eric Adams is giving up his mayoral duties but holding on to his party lifestyle.

In an interview with Ziwe released on Thursday (November 6), just days after Zohran Mamdani was elected as NYC's next mayor, Adams, 65, addressed criticism he faced during his tenure for frequenting clubs and late-night parties, which some saw as a distraction to his duties.

“Well, first of all, let your haters be your waiters as you sit down at the club night of success,” Adams told Ziwe when asked what he’d say to those who think 65 is too old to go clubbing. “I’m not sure why people think [at] 65 you should not be out.”

The mayor then went on to praise his own physique.

“When I get out of the shower and take a look at myself and my six pack and the firmness of my body — I’m living the 65 life,” Adams said, prompting Ziwe to joke that he could show off his abs on camera.

Adams dropped his reelection bid for mayor earlier this year and backed former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent after losing to Mamdani in the Democratic primary. Mamdani defeated Cuomo in Tuesday's (November 4) election and will take office on January 1, 2026.

During his interview with Ziwe, Adams said he doesn't let public opinion dictate his actions.

“You can’t wake up and read the papers and say, ‘Oh my god, I’m afraid of being criticized,’” he said. “I have 8.8 million people in the city, I have 35 million opinions. That is the city we call New York.”

Adams concluded the interview with a direct message to his successor.

“This is New York. It’s not Cuba. It’s not China,” he said. “It is the center of capitalism, not socialism. Can’t take it backwards. We made too much success. Gotta move forward.”
