Rep. Jasmine Crockett faced "white supremacist threats" at her congressional office in Washington, D.C.
On Thursday (November 20), Crockett said her office was targeted by a man who made "white supremacist threats and gestures" just after Trump openly called for Democratic lawmakers to face trial "punishable by death."
“Today an individual showed up to my D.C. office and made white supremacist threats and hand gestures. Everyone is safe, and I want to thank Capitol Police for their swift response,” Crockett said in a statement, noting that this type of activity "cannot become the norm.”
Crockett also suggested that inflammatory rhetoric from Trump, who "spreads hate and lies," may have incited the incident.
Threats intensify "every time I speak truth, stand up for constituents, or call out corruption," Crockett said, adding that Trump's rhetoric “puts a literal target on our backs.”
The threats against Crockett came on the heels of Trump sharing a series of posts on Thursday in which he accused six Democratic lawmakers of “SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH” and called for their arrests after they released a video urging U.S. military personnel not to follow unlawful orders. House Democratic leadership said they contacted Capitol Police and the House sergeant-at-arms “to ensure the safety of these members and their families.”
Despite the "white supremacist threats," Crockett has vowed to keep serving her constituency.
“I will continue to show up for the people of Texas’ 30th Congressional District,” she said. “We cannot pretend that this is normal. When leaders promote hate, hate shows up—sometimes right at our door.”
Thursday's incident remains under investigation.
