The body of a 21-year-old Black student was found hanging from a tree on Monday (September 15) at Delta State University.

According to WAPT, university police were alerted about a body discovered near the campus pickleball courts at roughly 7:05 a.m. The body was later identified as Demartravion "Trey" Reed, 21.

“Our community is deeply saddened by this loss, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to families and friends and all those who were impacted by Trey’s loss. I’ve spoken to Trey’s family and expressed our heartbreak," Delta State University President Daniel J. Ennis said in a statement.

Reed's death has sparked online speculation of a possible lynching at Delta State, where the student population is roughly 52 percent white and 36 percent Black. However, police said there is currently no evidence to support foul play.

“As of this time, there’s no evidence of foul play,” DSU Chief of Police Michael Peeler said, noting that an investigation into Reed's death remains active and involves the Cleveland Police Department, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations, and the Bolivar County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputy Coroner Murray Roark, who assisted in the medical examination, added: “There was no evidence of broken arms or legs... My opinion is that it was self-done, and I have reasons for that."

Bolivar County Coroner Randolph Seals Jr. also confirmed there were no signs of physical assault.

“At this time, there is no evidence to suggest the individual was physically attacked before his death," he said.

News of Reed's death prompted Delta State to cancel all classes and campus activities.

“Delta State University is a beautiful place to be,” Ennis said. “It’s just unfortunate, this loss that comes heavy to our campus.”

DSU students expressed concern following the tragic incident.

“Because I am a Black student, hearing that happened to another Black student, it really makes me feel unsafe,” student Stacie Hoskins said. Eriana Murphy, another student, added, “I do have to walk to class… it would be nice to know what happened.”

Reed's family is calling for a full and transparent investigation into his death.

“Trey was our little quiet light. He was sweet, well mannered, and would give you the world if he could. We ask that you continue to keep our family in your prayers as we continue to navigate through these unforeseen times," the family said in a statement.
